🎨 New to Watercolour? Start Here

May 27, 2025

If it’s been years (or decades) since you last picked up a paintbrush, welcome—you’re in the right place.

At Art Skill Academy, we help adults relearn how to create—without the pressure, perfectionism, or art-school jargon. Just step-by-step watercolour classes you can actually follow (and enjoy).

Not sure where to begin? Here’s your simple 3-step roadmap.👇

1. 🤔 Why Watercolour?

Watercolour is beautiful, expressive, and surprisingly beginner-friendly. Yes, really.

You don’t need expensive gear. You don’t need to draw like a pro. And you definitely don’t need to be “naturally talented.”

All you need is a bit of guidance, a splash of curiosity, and the permission to be a beginner again.

2. 🎯 What You Actually Need to Get Started

Let’s keep it simple. No art-shop meltdown required.

Basic starter list:

  • A set of student-grade watercolour paints (no need to splurge)

  • 2 or 3 decent brushes

  • Watercolour paper (140lb cold press is perfect)

  • A jar of water, some paper towel, and a bit of table space

That’s it. Seriously.

You can paint a ton with just that—and we’ll show you how.

We've even put together a Beginners Watercolour Set which has everything you need - including a guide on how to use your brushes and your first watercolour painting class!
